SOUTHAMPTON:
Ten-man Wolverhampton Wanderers dealt a huge blow to Southampton ‘s Premier League survival hopes as they came from a goal down to claim a valuable 2-1 victory with debutant Joao Gomes scoring a late winner on Saturday.

When Carlos Alcaraz scored in the 25th minute and Wolves had Mario Lemina sent off two minutes later for a second booking it seemed Southampton’s luck might be turning.

But Wolves levelled through Jan Bednarek’s 72nd-minute own goal and Gomes struck in the 87th minute to pile more pressure on Southampton manager Nathan Jones who has lost seven of his eight league games in charge.

“I’m feeling a lot of emotions really. I’m really disappointed. We had control of the game,” Jones said.

“We had a glorious chance to make it two and we didn’t and that seemed to galvanise them. We made substitutions to get more aggression and energy. We lack confidence. We had enough opportunities but lacked quality.”

While Southampton remain rooted to the foot of the table with 15 points, Wolves are on the rise and have 23, five points clear of the relegation zone.

Argentine Alcaraz produced a sweet strike for his first Southampton goal, his shot going in off the post.

Former Southampton player Lemina then stupidly got himself a second yellow card for dissent as he argued about a free kick.

Wolves were rewarded for their positivity after the break though as Adama Traore came off the bench.

It was Traore’s shot that was bundled into his own goal by Bednarek as the mood turned dark at St Mary’s Stadium.

Wolves sensed their moment and substitute Gomes fired home to complete the turnaround.

“Massive win. Fantastic win and a fantastic character of the team. That was a team win,” Wolves’ Ruben Neves said.

Boos greeted the final whistle as the home fans let their feelings be known.
