KUALA LUMPUR:
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, has congratulated the men’s indoor hockey squad for winning the Asia Cup in Bangkok, Thailand.

Also congratulating the men’s indoor hockey squad on Istana Negara’s Facebook page was the Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.

In a Facebook posting today, the King and Queen said they were proud of the team’s achievement and “wish the squad will continue to excel in the sport and make the country proud”.

Malaysian hockey made history when the men’s squad beat defending champions Iran 3-2 during a shootout (full time 4-4) yesterday to clinch the Men’s Hockey Indoor Asia Cup in Bangkok for the first time.

The win also ended Iran’s dominance in the championship since the country had won every tournament held since 2008.

Malaysia had lost four previous finals to Iran – in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2014.
