HANOI:
Despite not having much experience, national shooter Nurul Syasya Nadiah Arifin surprised everyone by winning the women’s 10m air pistol in her debut for Malaysia’s 35th gold medal at the SEA Games today.

The 20-year-old from Batu Pahat collected 239.3 points in the last round of action at the Hanoi Sports Training Centre, defeating the more experienced field.

Thailand’s Tanyaporn Prucksakorn took silver with 238.7 points, while Thu Vinh Trinh of Vietnam took bronze with 214.1 points.

Syasya’s triumph was the shooting squad’s second gold medal, following Johnathan Wong’s success in the men’s 10m air pistol yesterday.

She admitted to being nervous and thanked her coach Firdaus Rahim for his unwavering support since the qualifying round, where she finished third behind Vin Trinh and Singapore shooter Xiu Hong Teh.

For the record, Syasya won the 2018 Malaysian Games (Sukma) gold medal at the age of 16 after only a year of active shooting participation.

Meanwhile, two other national shooters, Bibiana Pei and Mumtazah Syahiidah Shamsuri, failed to get past the qualifying round.
