
Malaysia’s backup shuttlers, who were excellent when they tamed fancied Singapore in the semifinals yesterday, were unable to equal the Thais and had to settle for silver.
The first singles saw Jacky Kok Jing Hong being outplayed 21-10, 21-15 by Kunlavut Vitidsarn.
Undeterred, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun took the court as the first doubles and gave Chaloempon Charoenkitamorn-Nanthakarn Yordphaisong a run for their money before losing 22-20, 22-20.
It was then up to second singles Lee Shun Yang to prevent Thailand from sealing a 3-0 triumph, and in the first game, he gave Malaysia hope by defeating Khosit Phetpradab 21-16.
Shun Yang, however, could not maintain his consistency and lost the next two games 21-13, 21-19, allowing Thailand to win the gold medal.
Malaysia’s silver medal matches their performance at the 2019 edition in the Philippines.
Beaten semifinalists Indonesia and Singapore were awarded the bronze medal.
Meanwhile, Thailand made it a delightful double by winning the women’s team gold after defeating Indonesia 3-0.
The bronze went to hosts Vietnam and Singapore.
