HANOI:
The national rhythmic gymnastics squad achieved its target when it swept both the gold medals on offer at the SEA Games today.

The Malaysian women produced near-flawless performances to win the individual and team all-around events at the Quan Ngua Gymnasium Centre.

Malaysia began the day with a 1-2 finish in the individual all-around final as the experienced Koi Sie Yan clinched gold with 109.100 points and Ng Joe Ee silver with 104.900 points.

Labadan Breanna of the Philippines took bronze with 96.650 points.

Sie Yan, who is competing at her fourth SEA Games since 2015, was able to defend her gold medal from the 2019 event in the Philippines.

She now has a total of six individual gold medals, including the all-around in Singapore (2015), the all-around, hoop and clubs in KL (2017), and the ribbon in Manila (2019).

In today’s action, Sie Yan scored 25.250 points for hoop, 29.850 for ball, 26.600 for ribbon and 27.400 for clubs while Joe Ee had scores of 26.450 for hoop, 25.450 for ball, 26.600 for ribbon and 26.400 for clubs.

The Malaysian team had returned from the Manila SEA Games in 2019 with four gold medals through the team all-around, Izzah Amzan (ball and ribbon) and Sie Yan (ribbon).

Vietnam has only included two disciplines this edition – individual and team all-around.

Sie Yan said her victory has fuelled her desire to get a positive result at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games in July.

The 23-year-old said she was grateful to defend her gold medal and thanked her parents and coach Lidia Legotina for their unwavering support and encouragement.

“I didn’t feel as much pressure in the final as I did in the qualifying round. I just wanted to do my best,” she said.

Malaysia won their second gold in the team all-around in the evening session thanks to Shak Yuki, Ng Jia Wen, Jingle Shak Qi, Yap Yi Tung and Maia Ong Xiao Han after the quintet accumulated 49.200 points.

Thailand (41.550) and Vietnam (37.800) settled for silver and bronze respectively.
