Kisona stuns Saina to reach Swiss Open quarterfinals

The national shuttler fights back from a game down to beat the ex-world No 1.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Women’s singles shuttler S Kisona fought back from a game down to stun former world No 1 Saina Nehwal of India 17-21, 21-13, 21-13 in the second round of the Swiss Open at St Jakobshalle, Basel this morning.

The stunning fightback saw Kisona check into the quarterfinals.

In the first game, Kisona started well to lead 15-12 but Saina managed to draw level before romping home 21-17.

The second game saw both shuttlers going neck-and-neck at 8-8 before Kisona stepped on the gas to pull away and win 21-13.

In the rubber game, world No 64 Kisona and 23rd-ranked Saina were tied at 6-6 when Kisona again turned on the heat for a 21-13 win and a place in the last eight.

Kisona will face Thailand’s Supanida Katethong in the quarterfinals today at 9pm.

Meanwhile, three men’s pairs – Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani – as well as two women’s doubles combos – Lim Chiew Sien-Vivian Hoo and Anna Cheong-Teoh Mei Xing – are also through to the quarterfinals.
