PETALING JAYA:
The Tokyo Olympics are set to begin, and keeping in that friendly competitive spirit, Google is launching ‘Champion Island’, its largest-ever Doodle game consisting of seven sporting events.

The objective of the game is to defeat a champion to collect seven sacred scrolls and complete hidden challenges.

Playing as Lucky the Calico Ninja Cat, you can join either the Blue, Red, Yellow or Green teams, represented by Ushi (a cow), Karasu (a crow), Inari (a fox) or Kappa (a Japanese turtle-like water spirit).

The characters and team mascots pay homage to Japanese folktales from Hokkaido in the north, all the way to Okinawa in the south.

For instance, the archery mini game pits you against a champion inspired by famed samurai Nasu no Yoichi.

The seven mini games break down across several new and returning Olympic events like skateboarding, table tennis and climbing, each with its own ‘Legendary Champion’ to challenge from Japanese folklore and history.

The game’s graphics rock the retro visuals of titles like Pokemon and The Legend of Zelda, while controls are simple: arrow keys to navigate, and the space bar to roll and speed up.

These will remain the main controls along the course of the gameplay, even as the mechanics across the events differ from one to another.

The game is made in partnership with Japanese animators STUDIO 4°C, and is a nod to the popular 16-bit video games of the 80s and 90s.
