PETALING JAYA: Men’s singles star Lee Zii Jia claimed a big scalp at the All England Open today by defeating world No 1 Kento Momota of Japan in the quarterfinals.
Zii Jia, who came into the tournament on the back of poor outings at recent tournaments, surged to a straight games victory in 55 minutes.
The 21-16, 21-19 win is also his first in seven meetings over the two-time world champion.
World No 10 Zee Jia next faces the Netherlands’ Mark Caljouw in the semifinals tomorrow.
A win will make him the first Malaysian men’s singles player to qualify for the prestigious tournament’s final since Lee Chong Wei in 2017.
