KUALA LUMPUR:
The 2021 Badminton Asia Championships will no longer count towards rankings for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.

In a statement today, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) said it is not possible to reschedule the indefinitely postponed continental championship within the Olympic qualification period.

“The points will no longer be included,” they said, adding that no replacement tournament will take place as per the revised Olympic qualification system for Tokyo 2020.

Apart from that, the BWF also announced the cancellation of this year’s US and Canada Open which were slated to run from July 6 to 11 and June 29 to July 4 respectively.

“The ongoing Covid-19 restrictions and complications left local organisers no choice but to cancel the tournaments.

“The respective decisions of USA Badminton and Badminton Canada were made in consultation and agreement with the BWF,” they said.

The Race to Tokyo, which resumed this month at the Swiss Open, will close on June 15, with the Singapore Open serving as the last tournament for qualification.
