Thanks to Phee Jinq En, Malaysia win 1st swimming gold

21-year-old breaks her own national record en route to SEA Games victory.

NEW CLARK CITY:
Phee Jinq En ended Malaysia’s barren run in swimming at Manila SEA Games after winning the women’s 50m breaststroke gold at New Clark City Aquatics Centre today.

The 21-year-old clocked a national record 31.40 seconds, emulating the time she posted in the qualifying round in the morning.

Jinq En’s teammate Alicia Soosai came seventh out of eight swimmers with a time of 33.24s.

Thailand’s Jenjira Srisa-ard (31.41s) and Christie Chue May Mun Ee (31.43s) of Singapore settled for silver and bronze respectively.

Jinq En’s previous national record was 31.46s, achieved at last year’s Asian Games in Indonesia.
