SEPANG:
National coach Roelant Oltmans will not quit despite facing criticism for failing to steer the men’s hockey team to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Although Malaysian Hockey Confederation president Subahan Kamal has hinted at changing the coaching structure, the Dutchman says he is not a person who “runs out of my contract”.

The world No 11 Tigers lost the last chance to secure their ticket after going down 9-3 on aggregate to Britain in a two-match playoff in London over the weekend.

“I and all the parties signed the contract with full brains, because we wanted to achieve something,” said a defiant Oltmans upon arrival at KLIA.

“To get something out of a group in a country is a long-term process, not something you can get overnight.

“We all believe in the potential, but in some areas we have to work harder.

“Nowadays we have social media; everyone can write anything, let them do what they want.”

The 65-year-old, who has tasted World Cup victories as a coach with Holland’s men’s and women’s teams, has a two-year contract until October 2020.

The team had earlier missed a golden chance to qualify for Tokyo 2020 when they lost a penalty shootout to Japan in the 2018 Asian Games final.

The gold medallists qualify automatically as Asian champions.

Malaysia last played at the Olympics in 2000 (Sydney).
