KUALA LUMPUR:
Malaysian keglers reigned supreme at Asian Championships by bagging the men’s and women’s overall titles in Kuwait yesterday.

Esther Cheah delivered the sixth gold after stunning defending champion Jung Da-wun of South Korea, with 452 pinfalls against the latter’s 445, to win the women’s stepladder final.

Esther earlier advanced straight into the final after topping the qualifying round.

Chinese kegler Du Jianchao clinched the men’s event after defeating Lin Pai-Feng of Taiwan 491-455 while Japanese Shusaku Asato settled for bronze.

Malaysia amassed six gold, one silver and four bronze medals to finish winners, followed by South Korea in second (3-4-4) and China (2-1-1).

Malaysia also won the men’s overall category after collecting three gold and one bronze, with Timmy Tan the best performer, bagging men’s singles and all-event crowns.

Another gold came from men’s trios via Rafiq Ismail, Syafiq Ridhwan Abdul Malek and Ahmad Muaz Fishol.

The victory is a major boost for the team ahead of next month’s Manila SEA Games.
