KUALA LUMPUR:
Malaysia’s challenge at the BWF World Championships in Basel, Switzerland ended when men’s singles player Lee Zii Jia and mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying lost in the quarterfinals today.

Zii Jia fared well playing against reigning world champion and world No 1 Kento Momota of Japan at the St Jakobshalle Indoor Arena.

The Kedah-born shuttler was neck-and-neck with Momota until the Japanese player took the lead 11-10 in the first set.

A series of mistakes allowed Momota to seal it 21-12.

In the second set, Zii Jia did not stand a chance against the 24-year-old as he sealed victory 21-8.

The world No 13 has plenty to be proud off especially after making the quarterfinals in his World Championships debut.

“It is a good experience for me ending in the quarterfinals in my first world championship. I still have a long way to go, and the quarterfinal is not a good result for me,” said Zii Jia.

The 21-year-old admits he is not pleased and expects more from himself.

“I am not satisfied with my performance yet, I want more than that. But what I have learned here in Switzerland, is a good experience for me, enabling me to see clearly where I must improve. I will go back and train harder,” he added.

After the world meet, Zii Jia would be participating in the Taiwan Open, from Sept 3 to 8.

Earlier in the day, independent mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying were defeated by third seeds Yuta Watanabe-Arisa Higashino of Japan with 21-18, 12-21, 11-21.

The world’s fifth-ranked pair sealed the first set with 21-18, however, failed to stay consistent in the second set enabling the Japanese pairing to win 21-12.

Still determined for a semifinals berth, the Malaysian pair tried hard to bounce back in the third set but bowed out to the world No 3 pair 11-21.
