KUALA LUMPUR:
The FA Cup final match between Perak and Kedah this Saturday at Bukit Jalil Stadium will have an all Japanese referee line-up to address concerns about the quality of adjudication.

Takuto Okabe, 38, will be the lead referee and assisted by Akane Yagi, 45, Osamu Nomura, 30, and Malaysian, Razlan Joffri Ali, 34, who will be the reserve referee for the match.

According to the FA of Malaysia (FAM) and Malaysian Football League the decision to use foreign referees was a “first alternative” to solving the officiating issues that often arise in domestic league matches.

Okabe, who has been a Fifa referee since 2015, is a J1 League lead referee and has refereed in the AFC Champions League and AFC Cup from 2016-2019, the 2015 Universiade in South Korea and again in Taiwan in 2017, as well as the Asian Games in Indonesia in 2018.

Yagi has been a Fifa assistant referee since 2009 and has experience reffing at the 2015 Asian Cup in Australia, 2015 Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand, 2018 AFC Under-23 Championship in China, as well as AFC Champions League and AFC Cup matches since 2015.

Nomura was appointed a Fifa assistant referee this year and has been involved in AFC Champions League matches this season.

FAM secretary-general, Stuart Ramalingam, said the officials will be arriving in Kuala Lumpur tonight and have a Fifa MA Refereeing Course to attend, as well as a Malaysia Cup 2019 and Challenge Cup 2019 seminar in Shah Alam tomorrow.

“I wish the Japanese officials success and that the FA Cup 2019 final goes off smoothly,” he said in a statement today.
