Malaysia’s shuttlers exit Asia Junior mixed team event

Malaysia finish bottom of their group after defeats at the hands of Indonesia and Japan.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Malaysia’s junior badminton squad has been eliminated from the mixed team event of the Asia Junior Championship in Suzhou, China.

The national squad failed to advance to the quarter-finals after losing both Group A matches against top seeds Indonesia and Japan to finish bottom of the group.

In the opening match on Saturday, the national juniors suffered a 5-0 trouncing from Indonesia.

Men’s doubles pair Ching Kai Feng-Loo Bing Kun fell to Leo Rolly Carnando-Daniel Martini 16-21, 15-21 while women’s single player Zhing Yi Tan lost to Putri Kusuma Wardani 8-21, 13-21.

National men’s singles player Lee Shun Yang lost to Bobby Setiabudi 8-21, 21-11, 19-21.

Indonesia’s women’s doubles pair Nita Violina Marwah-Putri Syaikah then defeated Low Yeen Yuan-Valeree Zi Xuan Siow, who crashed out to 9-21, 9-21.

Indonesia’s mixed doubles duo Leo-Indah Cahya Sari Jamil sealed the 5-0 victory by beating Gan Jing Err-Yap Roy King 21-18, 21-5.

In the second match against Japan, Malaysia men’s doubles pair of Lwi Sheng Hao-Jhy Dar Ooi lost to Yoshifumi Fujisawa-Kakeru Kumagai 21-18, 16-21, 21-19.

In the women’s singles event, Riko Gunji beat K Letshanaa in straight sets 21-9, 21-13 but the Malaysian team got one back the men’s singles event as Kok Jing Hong beat Riku Hatano 21-18, 21-16.

The Japanese women’s double pairing of Rui Hirokami-Mizuki Otake triumphed over Go Pei Kee-Lee Xuan Teoh 21-17, 21-11 to make it 3-1.

Malaysian mixed doubles duo Gan-Yap ended the group match with a consolation victory over Tsubasa Kawamura-Hinata Suzuki 17-21, 21-19, 21-14.

With the 3-2 defeat, Malaysia exited the tournament earlier than the previous edition in Jakarta, where the team finished third after reaching the semi-finals before losing 3-0 to Japan.
