
Mohd Azizulhasni, the 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist easily defeated Yuta Wakimoto of Japan in two quarter-final races while Muhammad Shah Firdaus subdued Xu Chao of China 2-1.
Meanwhile, national track cycling head coach, John Beasley was pleased with the performance of both riders especially Muhammad Shah Firdaus who was forced to compete in the third race against the Chinese rider before cruising into the semi-finals, tomorrow.
“I guess we have only done half the job as we did not expect to go this far, so we have a lot of work to do, tomorrow.
“Both riders are in the good shape, but we will take one step at one time… It would a dream for me to see both riders competing in the final race, but both of them need to beat their respective opponents first before going to the final race,” the Australian coach added.
Earlier, Mohamad Nur Aiman Mohd Zariff failed to qualify for the individual pursuit when he finished eighth among 14 riders in 4 minutes 36.723 seconds.
Only the top four racers advanced to the medal deciding matches.
Meanwhile national women’s rider, Ju Pha Som Net missed a podium finish in the women’s Omnium after coming in fourth with 118 points in the race.
Yumi Kajihara of Japan claimed the gold medal with 138 points while the silver went to Taiwan’s Huang Ting Ting (126 points) and Kim Youri of South Korea collected the bronze (121 points).
Malaysia has so far bagged one silver medal through the men’s team sprint on Monday.
