LONDON:
English Premier League club Arsenal today confirmed the signing of Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach.

The club, which finished second in the recently-concluded 2015/16 Premier League season, announced on its official website, that the Swiss international is locked into a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old Xhaka, who has 41 caps, played 36 times for the Bundesliga club and captained them to fourth place last season.

According to Arsenal.com, Xhaka joined the German side in 2012 from Basel, where he had won two Swiss League titles and the Swiss Cup while still a teenager. He came through the youth ranks at the Swiss club, where he spent a total of 10 years.

“I’m very proud to be joining Arsenal. I cannot wait to move to London, represent this special club and play in the Premier League. I will give everything to help Arsenal win trophies and make the fans happy,” he told Arsenal.com.

Xhaka has made a name for himself in the Bundesliga with his aggressive style of play, and this has seen him get three red cards last season, but Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger felt his experience was vital.

“Granit Xhaka is an exciting young player, already with good Champions League and Bundesliga experience.

“We have been watching him for a long time now and he is a player who will add quality to our squad. We wish Granit a good Euro 2016 with Switzerland and look forward to welcoming him to Arsenal ahead of next season,” Wenger was quoted as saying by Arsenal.com.
