As academic professionals, our commitment to advancing knowledge and fostering informed discussions is paramount. However, it is crucial to remember that our influence extends beyond the university.

In recent times, we have observed instances where individuals have ventured beyond their fields of expertise in public discussions, which can undermine the integrity of scholarly discourse and public trust in our institution.

We would like to remind our esteemed academic members of the following principles:

Respect boundaries

Each academic field is built upon rigorous foundations of research and scholarship. It is imperative that we respect the boundaries of our own expertise and the expertise of our peers. Engaging with issues outside our disciplines can lead to misinformation and confusion.

Mutual respect

While we encourage interdisciplinary dialogue, it is essential to approach such collaboration with humility. Understanding that complex issues often require input from multiple fields, and thus, collaboration should be grounded in mutual respect for each area of knowledge.

Public responsibility

Academics hold a unique position in society, and with this privilege comes the responsibility to communicate information accurately. When discussing areas outside our expertise, we risk diluting our credibility and the credibility of our institution.

Scientific rigour

Upholding academic standards requires a commitment to evidence-based conclusions. Before asserting opinions or making claims in unfamiliar areas, we must strive to investigate the scholarship and verify the facts. This is crucial for maintaining the integrity of our discussions.

Critical thinking

We must model critical thinking by acknowledging the limits of our knowledge. This practice not only enhances our credibility but also encourages our audiences to reflect thoughtfully on complex topics.

As we navigate a rapidly changing academic and public landscape, let us recommit to the foundational principles that define our scholarly work.
