Trader claims trial over fatal crash that severed teen’s head

PETALING JAYA:
A 43-year-old trader has claimed trial to causing death by reckless driving in a road accident in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu, last month that severed an 18-year-old’s head.

Asrizal Hisham Khalid pleaded not guilty after the charge was read in the Kuala Terengganu magistrates’ court before magistrate Sharifah Amirda Shasha Amir Shariffuddin, Harian Metro reported.

Asrizal was charged with causing the death of Wah Han Keong, 18, by driving a Volkswagen Golf GTI dangerously at Jalan Losong Feri at 3.36pm on May 19.

The charge under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act carries a jail sentence of five to 10 years and a fine of between RM20,000 and RM50,000, as well as licence suspension, upon conviction.

Asrizal was granted bail of RM10,000 and his licence was suspended until the disposal of the case. The court fixed Aug 3 for mention.

Deputy public prosecutor Ameena Azzuhriyyah Ahmad prosecuted while Asrizal was represented by a lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
