PUTRAJAYA:
It was an emotional and proud moment for senior lawyer Gan Kim Sing as he witnessed his son elevated to the bench.

Kim Sing, who is still in practice, was at the Palace of Justice today to see his son, Techiong, take his oath of office before Chief Judge of Malaya Hashim Hamzah.

The 89-year-old, accompanied by his wife, Tiong Choo, travelled from Johor Baru despite his frail health.

“I am happy for my son to be appointed, and witness the historic occasion. At this advanced age, I had never thought that I could live to see my son sworn in as a judge to serve the country,” said the father of three.

His two daughters are also law graduates.

Kim Sing, who began practising law in 1969, had served the late Johor ruler, Sultan Ismail Ibrahim, as his personal legal adviser for several years.

“As such, I am also humbled today that my son received the instrument of appointment as a judge from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, the grandson of Sultan Ismail,” he told FMT.

Thirteen others also received their letters of appointment from the king at Istana Negara.

Techiong, 60, was one of the six judicial commissioners confirmed as judges of the High Court Malaya.

The others who took their oaths before Hashim were Suzana Said, Yusrin Faidz Yusoff, Arziah Apandi, Hazizah Kassim and Suriyati Hasimah Hashim.

Court of Appeal judges Ravinthran Paramaguru and Azmi Ariffin were elevated to the Federal Court and took their oaths before Chief Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh.

Six High Court judges – Dean Wayne Daly, Aliza Sulaiman, Amarjeet Singh Serjit Singh, Radzi Harun, Latifah Tahar and Ahmad Shahrir Salleh – were promoted to the Court of Appeal.

They took their oaths of office before Court of Appeal president Abu Bakar Jais.
