SHAH ALAM:
Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has suggested that the state postpone hosting this year’s Malaysia Games (Sukma) due to the conflict in the Middle East.

The ruler said the state’s hosting of the multi-sport event from Aug 15 to 24 would incur considerable costs, reported Berita Harian.

“In the current economic situation, I am of the view that it would be more appropriate for the event to be postponed until the crisis in the Middle East is resolved, and until the Shah Alam Stadium is fully completed.”

He also decreed for this year’s Sultan of Selangor Cup football match between Selangor and Singapore to be cancelled.

The ruler was speaking at the opening ceremony of the fourth session of the 15th Selangor state legislative assembly at the Selangor state secretariat building.

Earlier this month, youth and sports minister Dr Taufiq Johari said this year’s Sukma would be scaled down in light of the global energy crisis and ensuing economic impact.

A total of 53 venues across nine districts in Selangor will be used for the competition which is expected to feature 474 events across 37 sports.
