PETALING JAYA:
The first prosecution witness in the trial of five Johor family members accused of terrorism offences told the Kuala Lumpur High Court today he saw one colleague hacked and another shot in the head during the Ulu Tiram police station attack.

Corporal Khairul Azhar Abbi Paisa, 25, said he saw that Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar was hacked on the face, mouth and ear, while Syafiq Ahmad Said was shot in the head, Kosmo reported.

Both died in the incident.

Khairul said he and another corporal, Hasif Roslan, were patrolling the Ulu Tiram area near the police station at about 2.30am on May 17, 2024 when they received instructions from the officer-in-charge (OCS) to return to the station.

“Upon arriving in front of the station and getting out of the vehicle, I heard Lance Corporal Aznel Mat Salleh shouting for us to retreat and telling us that Azza had been hacked.

“I saw Azza lying between the barracks and the station building, covered in blood with slash wounds across his face from ear to mouth,” he said during examination-in-chief at the trial of the five over the attack.

Khairul said Aznel told him and Syafiq to move to the back of the station to look for the attacker, who opened fire at them.

“We ran back and regrouped behind the OCS’s office before Aznel went out to seek help, while Hasif, Syafiq and I moved to the front of the station near an armoured vehicle for cover.

“We tried to look towards the back of the station and saw the  man firing at us while we were taking cover behind the armoured vehicle.

“Hasif then stepped out towards the station gate to draw the attacker’s attention,” he said.

Khairul said Syafiq was shot in the head while they were in front of the armoured vehicle.

The attacker then attempted to seize Syafiq’s Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun but failed to remove it from Syafiq’s body.

At that point, he said, he managed to fire one shot at the attacker and attempted a second shot as he moved.

“However, my pistol jammed and I had to move behind the armoured vehicle’s tyre. After fixing the weapon, I fired another shot at the suspect’s body.

“At that moment, (I found) the suspect lying next to Syafiq,” he said.

He said a special forces unit arrived at about 3.30am, after which the situation at the station was brought under control.

He was later asked to identify the bodies of his two colleagues and the attacker.

The charges

A total of nine charges have been brought against five family members of the alleged attacker – Radin Imran Radin Yassin, his wife Rosna Jantan, son Radin Romyullah and daughters Farhah Sobrina and Mariah.

He also faces three charges of supporting terrorism by keeping homemade rifles to facilitate IS activities, pledging allegiance to its group leader, and possessing a book on the militant group.

His Singaporean wife Rosna and daughters were slapped with one charge each for deliberately omitting to provide information regarding crimes related to the ideology of terrorism.

Meanwhile, Radin Romyullah faces one count of supporting IS and another charge of possessing a hard disk containing IS materials.

Another of Radin Imran’s sons, Radin Luqman, had attacked the Ulu Tiram police station armed with a gun and parang.

He allegedly killed Azza and Syafiq before being shot and killed by the police. Another policeman was injured

Radin Luqman was previously suspected by police of being a member of Jemaah Islamiyah.

The prosecution is led by deputy public prosecutor Norinna Bahadun , while the five family members are represented by lawyers Faizal Rahman and Fatimah Zulaikha Ahmad Bashri.
