PETALING JAYA:
An e-hailing driver who drove against traffic along Jalan Klang Lama was handed a three-day jail sentence and fined RM6,000 by the Kuala Lumpur magistrates’ court.

Wong Kok Kong’s driving licence was also suspended for five years.

Magistrate Tg Syazwany Yasmyn Tuan Roslan handed down the sentence on Wong, 32, after he pleaded guilty to driving recklessly and dangerously along Jalan Klang Lama at 9.44am on April 5.

The court ordered Wong to begin serving his jail sentence today. He also settled his fine, failing which he would have to face an additional six months’ imprisonment.

Wong was charged under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a maximum jail term of five years, a fine of up to RM15,000, and disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for no less than five years, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Nurbatrisyia Razib sought an appropriate sentence as a deterrent.

Wong, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency after saying that he was mentally unstable at the time of the incident because of family problems.

Yesterday, a video went viral showing a vehicle driving against traffic from the Jalan Klang Lama/Jalan Sepadu intersection to the Jalan Kuchai Lama intersection.

An initial investigation found that the man had driven against traffic for about 500m after taking a wrong turn while heading towards the Mid Valley shopping centre.
