PETALING JAYA:
The Sabah government will allow civil servants in the state to work from home “if there is a need to do so”, chief minister Hajiji Noor said.

For now, Hajiji said his administration will monitor the impact of rising oil prices and the cost of goods before deciding on implementing the policy, the Borneo Post reported.

He also said he will raise the matter at the next state Cabinet meeting.

“If there is a need, we will implement it. We will see how it can be carried out,” he was quoted as saying after a Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration with the media on Saturday night.

He said the federal government’s decision on the work from home policy followed concerns over global economic uncertainties, including rising oil prices and increasing cost of goods, which have affected several countries.

“So we were asked to monitor the situation and take appropriate measures.”

On April 2, the federal government said that civil servants living more than 8km away from their office will be allowed to work from home for three days a week beginning on April 15, for civil servants in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor and the capital city of other states.

Civil servants in Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu will be allowed to work from home from Monday to Wednesday. Other civil servants will be allowed to do so from Tuesday to Thursday.

Yesterday, Sarawak’s tourism, creative industry and performing arts minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said while the policy can help reduce fuel consumption and lower costs, workers must remain productive and disciplined.
