3 killed after MPV crashes into trailer while overtaking cars

An eight-year-old boy meanwhile was seriously injured.

The MPV driver and two passengers were confirmed dead at the scene by a medical officer.

Three people were killed and an eight-year-old boy injured after a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) crashed head-on with a trailer lorry at KM33 of Jalan Lahad Datu-Tawau at about 1.05pm yesterday.

Lahad Datu police chief Dzulbaharin Ismail said the accident occurred when the man driving a Toyota Innova, heading from Lahad Datu to Tawau, allegedly overtook several cars before crashing head-on with the trailer.

He said the MPV driver, 40, and two passengers, aged 39 and 43, were confirmed dead at the scene by a medical officer. The boy, who was also a passenger in the Toyota, suffered serious injuries and was sent to Lahad Datu Hospital.

Dzulbaharin said the trailer driver, 56, suffered only minor injuries. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless driving.
