Ex-minister’s suit against PAS to be resolved, court told

High Court is told that former religious affairs minister Mujahid Yusof Rawa and PAS are negotiating the terms of settlement.

Mujahid Yusof Rawa is suing PAS and its secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan over a Facebook post published on Oct 16, 2022.
KUALA LUMPUR:
A lawsuit brought by former religious affairs minister Mujahid Yusof Rawa against PAS over the Islamic party’s purported claim that he supports the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community is likely to be resolved soon.

Lawyer Noorazmir Zakaria, representing Mujahid, told Justice Roslan Mat Nor that both parties had met last month to discuss a settlement.

However, he said they needed time to finalise the terms.

Faizi Che Abu, appearing for PAS, said the party’s approval was necessary before a consent judgment could be recorded.

“They (the party’s office-bearers) have a meeting next month,” he added.

“What if the office-bearers disagree?” Roslan asked.

The lawyer said discussions were ongoing among the party’s office-bearers but that the terms of settlement required further discussion before they could be finalised.

The court fixed the case for mention on Dec 30, for both parties to provide an update on the status of negotiations.

Both Mujahid and PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan were present in court.

Mujahid filed the lawsuit against PAS in 2022, claiming PAS had defamed him in a Facebook post titled “Mantan menteri agama PH sokong LGBT?” (“Former Pakatan religious minister supports LGBT?”) published on Oct 16, 2022.

He is seeking general, exemplary and aggravated damages as well as an order for PAS to remove the Facebook post.
