PETALING JAYA:
Heavy rain is expected to continue today in Hatyai and several parts of Songkhla province in Thailand, where 4,000 Malaysian visitors are said to have been stranded as of last evening.

The Thai meteorological department has forecast heavy rain on Sunday, before decreasing from Monday to Friday, according to Bangkok Post.

The news outlet also quoted the Thai department of disaster prevention and mitigation as saying that 10 southern provinces are flooded, affecting some 1.47 million people.

In addition to Songkhla, districts such as Trang, Satun, Yala and Narathiwat are flooded, but flood waters in Surat Thani and Krabi are receding.

Yesterday, Wisma Putra said it would continue to monitor the flood situation in Hatyai and Songkhla, where persistent rain had disrupted transportation, electricity, internet and piped water supply.

In a statement, it said all Malaysians were reported to be safe, adding that most of them were staying in multi-storey hotels, although some were experiencing temporary electricity outages and reduced access to food because of localised disruptions.

It said the Malaysian consulate-general in Songkhla had activated its operations team to assist Malaysians who may be stranded or in need of support.

“The consulate-general remains in close communication with local authorities, hotels and Malaysian groups in the affected areas,” it said.
