PETALING JAYA:
National men’s doubles shuttlers Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani secured a quarter-final spot at the Australian Open after a hard-fought second-round victory over a Taiwanese pair today.

The world No. 4 duo, who narrowly missed out on a World Tour Finals spot, took nearly an hour to beat the 12th-ranked Lee Jhe Hui-Yang Po Hsuan 21-23, 21-17, 21-10 in the last-16 tie at Sydney Olympic Park.

They will face either compatriots Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King or the South Korean-Malaysian combination of Choi Sol Gyu-Goh V Shem in tomorrow’s quarter-final.

Sze Fei-Izzuddin are hoping to end a challenging season on a high by winning the World Tour Super 500 Australian Open title.

They have only lifted the India Open trophy this year despite reaching two finals.

Separately, national women’s singles shuttler Wong Ling Ching, who defeated Canada’s world No. 15 Michelle Li at the Kumamoto Masters last week, lost to her in the second round this time.

The 49th-ranked Malaysian went down 16-21, 11-21 in 35 minutes.
