PETALING JAYA:
All business premises in major cities must have clean toilets and meet an overall standard of cleanliness in order to renew their operating licences under their local governments starting from next year.

Housing and local government minister Nga Kor Ming said this would be implemented in phases according to the category of local governments, starting with city councils next year, municipal councils in 2027, and finally district councils the following year.

He said this was to ensure that clean toilets were a norm nationwide, particularly in view of the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, Bernama reported.

A guideline will be issued by the ministry which would also set a new ratio of two female toilets per male toilet in business premises and public buildings, taking into account foot traffic and the needs of users.

“From next year, public toilets must meet this guideline … I have observed how women need more time to use the toilet,” he said.

Last month, Nga said all food and beverage outlets will be required to have clean toilets as part of the conditions to renew their business licence.
