Deputy education minister Wong Kah Woh said the ministry wants to ensure that the co-teaching concept, which will be introduced in stages, will not burden teachers.

Winding up his ministry’s debate on the 2026 supply bill at the Dewan Rakyat today, Wong said principals and subject panels may choose to have two teachers a class or stick with one teacher if staffing is limited, such as during sick or maternity leave.

The education ministry will introduce a co-teaching approach in the 2027 school curriculum, which will see two teachers conducting lessons in one classroom.

Education minister Fadhlina Sidek had said this would make teaching and learning sessions more engaging and effective, and ensure that every student receives adequate attention.

A pilot project involving 130 teachers across 65 primary schools has been conducted to evaluate its effectiveness.
