PETALING JAYA:
Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) today announced that it would contest 55 of the 73 seats up for grabs in the Nov 29 state election.

Coalition chairman Hajiji Noor said that only 51 candidates would be unveiled today, with the remaining four to be announced tomorrow.

As expected, Hajiji will defend the Sulaman seat which he has held since 1990.

Other key GRS figures in the line-up include acting Parti Bersatu Sabah president Dr Joachim Gunsalam in Kundasang, GRS secretary-general Masidi Manjun in Karanaan, and GRS information chief Joniston Bangkuai in Kiulu.

Parti Cinta Sabah president Anifah Aman will contest Bongawan, as previously announced.

Suspended Umno members Shahelmey Yahya and Andi Suryady Bandy, who backed Hajiji after Sabah Umno withdrew its support in 2023, were not included in today’s candidate list.

Shahelmey and Andi had hoped to contest Tanjung Keramat and Tanjung Batu respectively under the GRS banner. However, the coalition instead named Shahelmey’s brother, Shah Alfie Yahya, and newcomer Andi Shamsureezal for the two seats.

Also on the list is Hazem Mubarak, son of Sabah governor Musa Aman, who will contest Sungai Manila.

Usno president and former Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia was picked for Pintasan, while his wife, Diana Diego @ Yusrina Sufiana, will contest Sekong.

For the upcoming polls, GRS will be working with Pakatan Harapan which has its own electoral pact with Barisan Nasional (BN). However, GRS and BN will not be cooperating.

Nominations will be held on Nov 15, and early voting on Nov 25.
