Duo charged with smuggling 14 Myanmar migrants into country

KOTA BHARU:
Two men who acted as “ground handlers” for human trafficking were charged in the sessions court here today with smuggling 14 Myanmar migrants into the country.

Ezzaq Tasnim Roslan, 32, and Syafiq Nazeri, 29, nodded after the charges were read before judge Nik Habri Muhamad. However, no plea was recorded.

The two men were jointly charged with committing the offence at a house in Kampung Paloh Rambai, Ketereh, at 4am on Oct 19.

The charge was framed under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to 20 years, a fine or both, upon conviction.

The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Nur Kamilah Che Ibrahim while lawyer Ahmad Syafiq Aizat Nazri represented the two accused.

The court set Dec 10 for mention.
