The promotional video for the combat sports tournament was criticised after it featured a fight scene between two child fighters from Malaysia and Indonesia, with the youth and sports ministry stating that the competition had not been sanctioned by the ministry.
In a statement today, Warzone’s Yusuf Azmi acknowledged that the “face-off” stunt, which took place during the press conference, had sparked public concern and perceptions of bullying, particularly at a time when the issue remains a sensitive topic nationwide.
He also said future events would comply with all regulatory requirements and would not include any gimmicks or content involving violence or minors.
“We wish to apologise to the youth and sports ministry, education ministry, sanctioning bodies, parents, the sports community, and the general public,” he said.
“We understand and respect the public’s concern. The act was actually a pre-planned publicity gimmick between both participants and their coach.
“As young athletes, emotions and excitement on a big stage can sometimes lead to a loss of control … No excuses. We take full responsibility and will improve.”
Yusuf admitted that the incident reflected a failure to control the press conference and pledged to rectify the shortcomings.
He also outlined Warzone’s commitment to stricter regulations and better athlete management, including full compliance with the youth and sports ministry’s guidelines and requirements.
He said Warzone was committed to tighter supervision over underage athletes, as well as improved education, discipline, and professionalism among underage athletes.
Yusuf stressed that Warzone was created to develop discipline, confidence, and future opportunities for athletes – not to harm or exploit them.
“We humbly ask for the opportunity to make improvements rather than be punished without the chance to prove our commitment,” he added.
Earlier today, youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh criticised the tournament’s organisers for getting a child to issue a public apology following the controversy surrounding the competition.
Commenting on the child’s Instagram post, Yeoh said the organisers must take full responsibility for the unsanctioned event.
A video was uploaded to the Instagram account @alfateh_semboyanwarrior showing the child apologising for kicking an Indonesian competitor during the press conference.
