KUCHING:
The government is considering a possible ban on the online gaming platforms Roblox and UMI amid growing concerns over safety issues and exposure to inappropriate content that could negatively influence young users, says women, family and community development minister Nancy Shukri.

She said the matter is still under discussion, with any final decision to take into account Australia’s upcoming regulations on Roblox, which are expected to come into force next month.

“We are closely monitoring how Australia implements these regulations. They are still in the planning stage and nothing has been enforced yet.

“Malaysia will evaluate whether a similar approach is suitable for our local context and cultural norms,” she told reporters after attending a temporary relief centre training and simulation programme here today.

The Australian government is considering restrictions on Roblox for users aged 16 and under, following concerns that the platform could negatively influence children.

Nancy was responding to questions about an incident on Monday in which a six-year-old boy was critically injured after allegedly being stabbed with a sharp object by his nine-year-old brother in Batu Pahat, Johor.

Johor police chief Rahaman Arsad said preliminary findings suggested that the incident occurred after the victim allegedly caused his brother to lose points accumulated while playing Roblox.
