PETALING JAYA:
Thirty-eight cases of cable and other component thefts were recorded in the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project stretch between Terengganu and Pahang from January to September, with losses amounting to RM2.9 million.

Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd CEO Darwis Abdul Razak said the company and police had put in place several security measures, including installing 116 CCTV cameras and hiring 67 security guards, to address the problem.

He said the plan was to watch over areas often targeted for theft, adding that cases were “not confined to one location”.

“We’ve received good cooperation from all the states involved. We want all parties to take this issue seriously, as it could affect the opening (of ECRL operations) if it persists,” Bernama reported him as saying at Wisma Darul Iman in Kuala Terengganu today.

Darwis said the ECRL project in Terengganu had achieved 93.55% progress.

“Overall, the ECRL project has reached 88.08% completion. This shows that we are on track to fully complete the project by December 2026 and begin operations in January 2027,” he said.
