Malaysia went overboard in welcoming Trump, says PAS

The party says the manner in which the US president was welcomed rubbed salt into the wounds of Gazans who were still suffering.

PETALING JAYA:
PAS has taken issue with the manner in which US President Donald Trump was welcomed upon his arrival in Malaysia this morning to attend the Asean Summit.

The party’s secretary-general, Takiyuddin Hassan, said Malaysia went “overboard” when they rolled out the red carpet for Trump.

“It rubs salt into the wounds of the people in Gaza who are still suffering,” he said, adding that it was insensitive in view of the ongoing humanitarian disaster in the Middle East.

Trump was greeted by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and senior officials upon disembarking from Air Force One at 10.06am.

The US president appeared in a cordial mood, joining cultural performers in a brief dance before waving the national flags of Malaysia and the US.

“We should not adopt such an approach when interacting with him,” Takiyuddin said. He reminded the government that any negotiations or trade deals signed with the US must be based on principles of respect and justice.

“Bilateral ties must be guided by this principle and equal economic benefits,” he said.

PAS had previously staged several protests over Trump’s expected arrival.
