Speaking at the 13th Asean-US Summit here, Trump praised Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for hosting the meeting and said Malaysia’s leadership reflected the region’s growing role in global diplomacy.
“My message to the nations of Southeast Asia is that the US is with you 100%, and we intend to be a strong partner and friend for many generations to come.
“Together, we’ll create incredible prosperity for the nations on both sides of the Pacific Ocean and to seize new opportunities for all of our people,” he said.
Anwar, in his remarks, welcomed Washington’s commitment to the region and voiced Malaysia’s support for Trump’s Gaza peace plan.
He said the initiative had given the international community “a glimmer of hope” that diplomacy could still prevail even in long-standing conflicts.
“We welcome your comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict. It has given the world a glimmer of hope that even in the most intractable conflicts, diplomacy and determination can prevail,” Anwar said.
He said the move underscored how political will and dialogue remained essential in resolving disputes, and that Malaysia trusted Washington’s leadership to help secure “a just and durable peace”.
Trump’s peace plan is a 20-point proposal calling for a ceasefire, deradicalisation of Gaza, international oversight, and redevelopment.
It includes phased Israeli withdrawal, the release of hostages, and transitional governance by Palestinian technocrats under international supervision. It also comes with an ultimatum for Hamas to accept the plan or face severe consequences.
Trump, meanwhile, described the peace accord signed earlier in the day between Cambodia and Thailand as part of a broader push to end conflicts worldwide, calling it a milestone in his administration’s global peace efforts.
“Today’s signing marks just one of eight conflicts we’ve helped bring to an end in eight months of the Trump presidency.
“It is a new day in the Middle East. The Middle East will have peace after 3,000 years. It’s gonna be an everlasting peace,” Trump said.
Thailand and Cambodia signed a joint peace agreement to sustain a ceasefire along their shared border, in a ceremony witnessed by the US and Malaysia as Asean chair.
