PETALING JAYA:
About 100 people gathered at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur today to protest US president Donald Trump’s visit to Malaysia.

The participants, comprising members of several non-governmental organisations, began assembling at about 9.30am.

Many were seen waving Palestinian flags, holding placards condemning genocide, and chanting “Free Palestine”, Utusan Malaysia reported.

Those present included Amanah’s international bureau chairman, Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah, and activist and former PKR vice-president Tian Chua.

The rally was initially scheduled to take place near the Ampang Park MRT station, next to the Jalan Tun Razak-Jalan Ampang junction, but was relocated to Dataran Merdeka at the last minute.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus thanked the organisers of the protests for managing the crowd and obeying police orders.

“The rally had taken place without any unwanted events with police keeping a close watch,” he said.

Rapid KL had announced the closure of several train stations between 7am and noon to ensure passenger safety.

The stations included Ampang Park and KLCC on the Kelana Jaya LRT Line; Conlay, Persiaran KLCC, and Ampang Park on the Putrajaya MRT Line; and Bukit Bintang on the Kajang MRT Line.

Trump arrived in Kuala Lumpur earlier today to attend the 47th Asean Summit and related meetings, where he witnessed the signing of a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia.
