KUALA LUMPUR:
Some 50 demonstrators who were part of a motorcycle convoy protesting against US president Donald Trump’s arrival in Malaysia tomorrow, were arrested by police tonight.

The protesters rode in convoy past the US embassy here at about 10pm.

The riders, some of whom were seen carrying Palestine flags, were heard shouting slogans critical of US ties with Israel.

The protesters were also heard shouting “rise Malaysia and chase Donald Trump away”.

They were arrested at a roadblock in front of Menara Tabung Haji, approximately 100 metres from the US embassy.

The protesters were later told to walk their vehicles to the Jalan Tun Razak police station, where their motorcycles were seized.

Yesterday, around 700 people staged a protest outside the embassy over Trump’s visit to attend the 47th Asean Summit and the East Asean summit meetings.

Police stopped the convoy about 100m from the embassy and the protesters were told to walk their vehicles to the Jalan Tun Razak police station.

A heavy police presence was in place, including the Federal Reserve Unit, as the demonstrators chanted “Reject Donald Trump”, with some carrying placards telling him to “go home”.

On Sept 27, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim defended the decision to invite Trump to attend the summit, saying Malaysia will use diplomatic channels to continue voicing concerns over Palestine, including the atrocities in Gaza.

Earlier today, police again warned organisers not to proceed with a protest against Trump, scheduled to take place near the Ampang Park MRT station here tomorrow.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus said the chosen venue was deemed unsuitable based on intelligence and a joint security assessment with other enforcement agencies.
