KOTA BHARU:
Police in Kelantan will go ahead with plans to demolish more than 100 illegal jetties along the Malaysia – Thailand border despite receiving various forms of “provocation from certain parties” in Thailand.

Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat said the large-scale operation is scheduled to begin next Monday and would be carried out in stages, starting with the Pasir Mas and Rantau Panjang areas.

“The operation will begin in Pasir Mas and Rantau Panjang first. At the moment, we are facing several provocations from them there, but the operation will go on,” Yusoff told reporters at the state police headquarters today.

He said the provocations included attempts to obstruct demolition work as well as issues involving cross-border family ties among residents on both sides.

The acting southeast brigade commander of the General Operations Force, Ijid Landu Binju, said the GOF would assist the police if required.

“The role of the GOF is to provide human resource and logistical support if requested by departments involved in the demolition of illegal jetties,” he said.
