22 injured in Kulim fireworks explosion

Police say one victim suffered a serious forehead wound while others sustained minor injuries.

Twenty-two people were injured, including one man who suffered a serious forehead wound, after an explosion occured during a fireworks display at Paya Besar near here early today.

Kulim police chief Zulkifli Azizan said the incident occurred at about 12.45am when a large crowd had gathered along the roadside to watch the fireworks display.

“Several people were injured after the fireworks exploded unexpectedly.

“Two ambulances were dispatched to the scene to provide initial treatment before the victims were taken to Kulim Hospital,” he said in a statement today.

Zulkifli said one man sustained a deep cut measuring about 5cm on his forehead, while the others suffered minor burns and injuries.

He added that the situation was quickly brought under control after the injured were sent for treatment.
