PETALING JAYA:
The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) is set to welcome 220 recruits next year, with priority given to armed forces veterans in a move aimed at boosting discipline, efficiency, and security across the nation’s borders.

AKPS director-general Shuhaily Zain said the inclusion of former soldiers will not only reinforce the agency’s workforce, but also inject valuable military experience and a strong sense of discipline into its operations, Sinar Harian reported.

Shuhaily said many veterans, including those who once held the ranks of colonel, lieutenant colonel, and major, have expressed strong interest in joining AKPS, with some even submitting their resumes in person.

“The response shows strong interest among veterans to continue contributing to national security even after retiring from military service,” he was quoted as saying.

“I see this as a win-win opportunity with veterans being able to continue to serve, and the nation benefiting from experienced personnel to safeguard its borders.

“When we bring in veterans, we’re not just adding manpower – we’re introducing a culture of discipline.”

He was speaking to reporters during a press conference marking AKPS’s first anniversary celebration yesterday.

Shuhaily said the recruitment, announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in the 2026 budget, forms part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance border security and combat cross-border crimes more effectively.

Recruitment will follow the Perhilitan (wildlife department) contract service model, meaning appointments will be contractual rather than permanent civil service positions.
