PETALING JAYA:
Umno has postponed its annual general assembly to Jan 14-17, 2026 in light of the Sabah state election taking place next month.

Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the general assembly, which was set for Nov 26-29, coincided with the Sabah polls.

The Election Commission yesterday announced that the 17th Sabah state election will be held on Nov 29, with the nomination day falling on Nov 15. Early voters can cast their ballots on Nov 25.

“We hope this postponement will allow Umno leaders and machinery to focus on helping Sabah Barisan Nasional regain the people’s trust so BN can once again lead the state government for the welfare and well-being of Sabahans,” Asyraf said in a statement.

Umno’s general assembly was initially set to take place from Aug 20-23 before being postponed to Nov 26-29 to allow the party to prepare for the Sabah state election.

This election is shaping up to be yet another crowded contest, with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) set to clash with BN despite both coalitions separately reaching a pact with Pakatan Harapan (PH).

Perikatan Nasional (PN), Warisan, Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM), Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR), Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) and Parti Gemilang Anak Sabah are also expected to field candidates for the 73 seats up for grabs.
