This marks the bloc’s next phase in building a secure, connected and sustainable energy future across the region.
In a statement, the energy transition and water transformation ministry (Petra) said the roadmap will focus on decarbonisation, digitalisation and diversification of the regional energy mix.
Apaec, which serves as the region’s long-term blueprint for energy collaboration, guides Asean’s joint efforts on renewable energy, efficiency, grid connectivity and energy security.
The plan was endorsed at the 19th East Asia Summit Energy Ministers’ Meeting and the 22nd Asean+3 Ministers on Energy Meeting, both chaired by deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof following the 43rd Asean Ministers on Energy Meeting.
The statement said ministers reaffirmed a shared vision of a secure and sustainable East Asia energy landscape, strengthening Asean’s position as a hub for regional connectivity and resilience.
Malaysia, through Petra, stressed that Asean’s cooperation must move beyond talk to implementation-driven frameworks that can mobilise funding and expand cross-border power grids.
“Regional cooperation must evolve from policy dialogue to implementation-driven frameworks, enabling Asean and its partners to mobilise blended finance, expand grid interconnections, and achieve net-zero objectives collectively,” it said.
The outcomes of both meetings also reaffirmed Malaysia’s central role in bridging Asean with its East Asian partners via the Asean Power Grid Financing Initiative, a new platform launched earlier this week to fund cross-border energy infrastructure and renewable projects.
The series of meetings concluded under the theme “Powering Asean: Bridging Boundaries, Building Prosperity”, underscoring the region’s long-term commitment to strengthening energy security, affordability and sustainability.
