PETALING JAYA:
Malaysia’s top doubles pair and world No 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik suffered a shock exit in the opening round of the Denmark Open at the hands of a new Indonesian combination in straight games today.

Unranked Muhammad Rian Ardianto-Rahmat Hidayat, who are playing together for the first time in an international tournament, took just 33 minutes to win 21-17, 21-13 at the Arena Fyn in Odense, Denmark.

Aaron-Wooi Yik, who were runners-up at the Arctic Open in Finland on Sunday, made numerous unforced errors throughout the match.

It was the fourth time this year that they have been bundled out in the opening round of a major tournament.

Last year, the double Olympic bronze medallists made it to the quarter-finals of the Denmark Open but failed to advance.

Their inconsistency is said to be a concern among the national coaching team as they are being groomed as medal hopefuls at the next Olympics in 2028 under the RM20 million Road to Gold programme.
