PETALING JAYA:
The installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in 200 boarding schools under the education ministry nationwide is expected to be completed by November.

The ministry’s deputy secretary-general (planning and development), Wan Hashim Wan Rahim, said the RM3 million project, which began in August, would enhance student safety in both the school and dormitory areas.

“The cameras will be installed in high-risk boarding schools, including those with a history of bullying incidents.

“Installation is ongoing, and we expect all the cameras to be fully operational by early December,” Bernama reported him as saying in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, today.

Wan Hashim said the CCTV cameras would play a crucial role in improving investigations, as many incidents in school and dormitory areas had been difficult to substantiate in the past.

He noted that CCTV footage would assist both police and the ministry in investigating and taking action regarding incidents in school and dormitory premises.

He also said the number and placement of cameras in each school would be determined based on specific needs, in collaboration with the office of the chief government security officer and the police, to ensure privacy for students and teachers.

“Some schools may require eight or 10 cameras, depending on their circumstances. We will consult with (the office) to ensure cameras are installed at appropriate angles,” he said.

Wan Hashim said plans were also in place to expand CCTV coverage to other schools in the future.

“Though their installation may not be extensive, cameras will be placed in key areas within schools to facilitate investigations and enhance overall security,” he said.
