The energy transition and water transformation ministry said this in a statement following the second day of preparatory meetings leading up to the 43rd Asean Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) on Oct 16 and 17.
Two key sessions were convened today – the East Asia Summit Energy Cooperation Task Force (EAS ECTF), and the Asean Senior Officials Meeting on Energy Plus Three (SOME+3) – to strengthen coordination and readiness for the ministerial meetings.
The EAS ECTF brought together Asean member states, Timor-Leste, Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Russia and the US, reaffirming their commitment to a secure and inclusive regional energy future.
Delegates reviewed progress across cooperation areas and stressed the need for closer alignment with the Asean Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC), aimed at bolstering regional energy security and driving a sustainable clean energy transition across Asean.
As Asean chair, Malaysia underscored the importance of collaboration in renewable energy integration, cross-border power interconnection, and innovative financing mechanisms under the forthcoming APAEC 2026-2030 framework.
Meanwhile, the SOME+3 meeting focused on deepening cooperation between Asean, China, Japan, and South Korea, particularly in energy security, clean energy transition, and renewable energy investment.
The meeting also reaffirmed support for the Asean Power Grid (APG) and other joint platforms set to be discussed during the 43rd AMEM.
Both meetings concluded with a shared commitment to enhance regional energy collaboration and ensure the success of the upcoming 19th East Asia Summit Energy Ministers’ Meeting (EAS EMM) and 22nd ASEAN+3 Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM+3).
The 43rd AMEM will see the launch of the APAEC 2026-2030 framework, alongside the signing of two key memoranda of understanding: the APG and Asean Petroleum Security Agreement.
Outcomes from the 43rd AMEM will contribute to Asean’s long-term vision of a unified, secure, and low-carbon energy future, as ministers renew their commitment to achieving sustainable growth and shared prosperity.
