He said this was part of the ministry’s anti-bullying efforts, based on advice from the office of the chief government security officer.
“We are also conducting surprise visits and spot checks,” he told the Dewan Rakyat today.
Wong was responding to Dr Halimah Ali (PN-Kapar), who had asked about anti-bullying efforts, including preventive mechanisms, monitoring, early intervention and stern action against bullies and lax administrators.
Wong said these spot checks would be held at night to check hostels’ compliance with standard operating procedures.
He said they would involve high-ranking ministry officers, state education directors and district education officers.
“We are also implementing comprehensive preventive measures, including increasing awareness of the importance of personal well-being and mental health, and teaching students how to manage their emotions and behaviour,” he said.
Wong said “character ambassadors”, “peer counsellors” and student leaders would be appointed to help steer fellow students away from wrongdoing, including online.
“They will serve as examples to other students, guiding them and preventing the occurrence of disciplinary issues,” he said.
