War of words as Azalina hits out at Takiyuddin on splitting AG, PP

Azalina Othman Said accuses Takiyuddin Hassan of doing little to split the roles of attorney-general and public prosecutor when he was law minister from 2020 to 2021.

Law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said said the unity government ‘walks the talk’, unlike the previous PN administration which had Kota Bharu MP Takiyuddin Hassan as its law minister.
KUALA LUMPUR:
A war of words erupted in the Dewan Rakyat today after law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said accused Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Bharu) of doing little to split the roles of the attorney-general and public prosecutor during his time as law minister.

Azalina said that unlike the previous administration led by Muhyiddin Yassin (PN-Pagoh), the unity government had shown its commitment to implementing the reform and gone beyond making empty promises.

“The Madani government is not a government that only spews rhetoric, unlike when (Takiyuddin) was law minister in 2020, talking about separating the (AG and PP’s) roles but not doing anything.

“We are different. We walk the talk,” she told the Dewan Rakyat, after which Takiyuddin stood to accuse the minister of “playing politics” and evading his query.

Takiyuddin had asked if the government would form a royal commission of inquiry to investigate the leak of the Judicial Appointments Commission’s (JAC) minutes and the royal addendum involving Najib Razak.

The PAS secretary-general said both incidents had tarnished the reputation of the AG’s Chambers and were important in the context of separating the AG and PP’s roles.

Azalina said she could not answer Takiyuddin’s question for fear of sub judice, but that the matter of integrity applied to all parties who hold positions in the government.

Takiyuddin rose again and said: “My question is simple. If you don’t dare to answer, just say so.”

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul then urged all MPs to remain calm and to “save their energy” as today was only the first day of proceedings.
