Terengganu state secretary Zulkifli Ali said the subsidy would involve a financial implication of RM24 million per year.
He said the decision was made in a state executive council meeting yesterday after taking into account the increased cost of living.
“After conducting studies and considering all aspects, the meeting on Oct 1 agreed for the state government to bear a 30% water bill subsidy for domestic Band 2 consumers and 15% for domestic Band 3 consumers,” Bernama reported him as saying.
Domestic band 2 consumers comprise 78,807 accounts while the Band 3 category has 94,610 accounts.
Zulkifli said he hoped the move would create a win-win situation for the state’s people and water operator company Syarikat Air Terengganu Sdn Bhd (Satu).
“Hopefully, this can help reduce the burden on domestic consumers and ensure a stable and sustainable water supply for the people,” he said.
